DSI is looking for a hands-on Safety Coordinator with real fabrication, manufacturing, industrial, or mechanical
contractor Safety experience. The person selected will spend the majority of the workday inside active fabrication
operations, working directly with employees, leads, supervision, shop management, and other Safety Professionals.
Comfortable around welding, cutting, grinding, fabrication machinery, stationary equipment, forklifts, overhead cranes,
rigging, compressed gases, electrical equipment, chemicals, and material handling.
Able to recognize hazards, ask intelligent questions, evaluate the controls being used, and work with supervision to correct
deficiencies.
Interested in learning how the work is performed, not just checking whether a rule or form exists.
Capable of documenting findings and closing the loop through follow-up and communication.
Work Environment: What They Will Be Around
Welding and cutting operations
Carbon steel / iron and stainless piping fabrication
Sheet metal fabrication equipment
Stationary machinery and point-of-operation hazards
Grinding, cutting, drilling, and material preparation equipment
Overhead bridge cranes, hoists, and rigging
Forklifts and other mobile equipment
Compressed gas cylinders and torch systems
Hot work and fire prevention controls
Electrical equipment, panels, portable tools, and extension cords
Hazardous energy and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
Hazard Communication, chemicals, cleaners, oils, coatings, flammable and combustible materials
Modular fabrication, assembly, staging, storage, and material movement
Noise, respiratory, ergonomic, and other occupational exposures
Core Responsibilities
Field Engagement
Maintain a regular presence in fabrication areas and observe how work is actually being performed.
Interact directly with employees, leads, foremen, supervisors, shop management, and Safety teammates.
Observe employee positioning, machine use, material handling, crane and rigging activity, forklift/pedestrian interaction, hot
work, electrical conditions, PPE, chemical use, and housekeeping/layout.
Provide real-time coaching and practical guidance while respecting operational responsibilities.
Inspections, Hazard Identification, and Corrective Action
Conduct regular shop Safety inspections and observations and participate in the DSI monthly Fabrication Shop Inspection
process.
Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and distinguish significant hazards from minor observations.
Immediately communicate significant deficiencies to the responsible supervision.
Work with supervision to identify practical corrective actions and responsible parties.
Document findings and follow up until corrective actions are complete.
Escalate significant hazards, unresolved issues, incidents, or potential liability concerns through the DSI Safety
Department.
Employee and Supervisor Interaction
Communicate effectively with a first-day employee, experienced welder, forklift operator, shop lead, foreman, supervisor,
Operations Manager, Safety Manager, and executive leadership.
Correct unsafe conditions or behavior without unnecessarily creating confrontation.
Understand when immediate intervention is required and when coaching, planning, or follow-up is the better approach.
Approach operations as partners who must balance Quality, Budget, Productivity, and Safety.
Training and Coaching
Assist with new-hire and shop-specific Safety orientation.
Support DSI-approved training and field coaching involving PPE, Hazard Communication, LOTO, powered industrial trucks,
cranes/rigging, machine safety, hot work, emergency procedures, and other assigned topics.
Use DSI-approved forms and training materials and submit required documentation promptly.
